THE WEATHER.

The week-end showers have done much good, though more rain would bo beneficial to the Jiay crops, which will, soon be due for cutting. ’Pile spell of hot weather, which gome, feared would develop inito a drouglit, has furnished some temperature lecords for the time of the year. Tennis players have had an ideal week, the Awatuna court having been welt patronised nearly every day by seveid'i of the younger members, who are showing commendable keenness this season. Some of tiie Riverleamembers of the Rivertuna team paid a visit on Wednesday to practise with the Awatuna players, who returned the visit later in the week. On Friday the Awatuna School played a match on the local court against the Riverlea School, the latter winning by 5 sets to 3. Jn the doubles the Awatuna juveniles beat- their opponents, but in the sing.es Riverlea were superior, the Jokseplison -sisters amcl P. Rotlie showing signs of developing into really good players. The young-st-ers thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, hot a-s it was, with no shade from the burning sun, whilst the refreshments half-way through the afternoon did much to restore any jaded spirits there may have been. It is expected that a return match will be played at Rievrlea in a few days. SCHOOL BREAK-UP.

Several parents met at the school last Thursday to decide upon some kind of breaking-up function for the School. The concensus of opinion being against a Christmas tree, it- was decided to have a children’s dance, including novelties, and a social evening followed by a Christmas‘tree with- lucky parcels,, etc. After this will, follow old-time ail'd modern dances for adults. The admission will be Is’ for everyone, excepting school children, the women to provide a basket in addition. GROUP-JUDGING DAY. This year Awatuna is the group in the calf-rearing competitions. TE NGUTU. Sweltering heat, good tennis and a most enjoyable afternoon marked the contest at the River ea court on Saturdav -afternoon between Rivertuna and Te" Nmitu.
