LONDON, Dec. 9. Sir Hubert Wilkins, in a wireless message from Deception Island, says that lie made a flight to aoertain whether ice would form on tt-he machine, also to examine the island for landing fields. The temperature Yvas two degrees- be'iOYV zero, but no ice formed on .the machine. A suitable fidlcl for skis was found. During the interval between snow stornis lie flew over Snoiv Island. When alighting, an enormous albatros smashed into the butt of the propeller. The bird had a wing spread of ten feet. If it had struck the propdiler tips or the'pilot’s wind-shield, disaster cvould have been likely. Near the island’s edges were crevasses many hundreds of yards long -and wide enough to engulf the ’plane. He must- examine the island on foot before using it as a base.
