NOTES AND COMMENTS.

BY ‘‘MAECENAS.” A few horses from Taranaki stables are nominated at the Manawatu Racing Club meeting. The stablemates Oratrix and Concentrate are being worked righthanded at Trentliam, in view of their Ellerslie engagements. In some quarters Concentrate is regarded as a likely winner of the Great Northern Derby. Amongst those nominated lor the Manawatu Cup appears Hynanna, who will make his first appearance since returning from his unsuccessful trip to Australia, whence lie was taken with the idea of winning the Caulfield Cup. Although Seatown failed to gain place money in his races at the recent meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club, his form was promising, and if he goes on the right way lie may secure some prize money during the holiday period. After racing in the Alison Cup at Takapuna Seatown appeared to be lame, and inquiries elicited the fact that he lias been going down on a letlock. Eeremoana is similarly affected lit times. This must prove painful to any horse unlucky enough to develop the symptom. The Christmas meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club suffers through such • important gatherings as those of ihe Auckland and Manawatu Clubs, but in spite of such there is material engaged at the coming meeting that ensures a really good meeting, and this year’s gathering gives promise of being at least quite the equal of its predecessors. Last season Staghunter showed exceptionally good form in some of bis races, but this season lie has failed lamentably. At present Staghunter is being worked with a view of being raced in the Great Northern Derby. As a two-vear-old Prodice won a

number of handicap races, some of which were won under substantial weights, but slio was not quite equal to weight-for-age standard. During the winter Prodice thrived well, and this season is considerably better than most of last season’s best youngsters, the majority of which have not made age improvement. On the form shown this season Prodice will he very hard to beat in the Great Northern Derby. Prior to the spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club it appeared almost a certainty that Ilapier would be a runner in this year’s Auckland Cup, and, what is more, he appeared to hold exoelelnt prospects of winning that handicap for the second time. Latest advice from Ricenrton suggests that 'Rapier is a most unlikely runner at EHerslic. Possibly the mishap that Papier sustained during the running of the New Zealand Cup has caused more trouble than anticipated. The Irisli-hred Hoylake promises to be one of the early fancies - ior the coming Auckland Cup. As he will he thoroughly seasoned, Hoylake should take some heating, more especially as it is generally conceded that the E-llers-lio race is less trying on most horses than is the Picearton course. Hoylake has a nice handy weight, but on actual performances has no advantage | in handicap. This imported horse will j have J. Barry in the saddle. j The useful middle distance performer Duke Abbey has been sold to a Mel- 1 bourne sportsman by Mr. P. Blundell. The gelding leaves' with trainer E. Yuille’s team immediately. Bit and well, Duke Abbey should soon rel urn his purchase money. The Hawke’s Bay bred Kimnymede was one of the highest priced geldings sold in this Dominion. He can also lay claim as equalling the _ greatest failure sent from this Dominion to Australia, as up till this week Burmymecle failed in all his races. Despite such failures Itunnymcde has been kept well up in the weights, and in the Leumegh Handicap at the Y\ arwiok Farm meeting last Wednesday he had to carry 9.0 to win. As the minimum was 7.7, Punnymecle’s performance gives hope of his showing reasonably good form, which would mean a certain amount of success. The ex-hack Historic, trained by S. Reid at Trentliam, is to contest the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day. In all his races Historic has performed like a stayer, hut ho needs an experienced rider to make him do Ids host. One point in favour of Historic is ill at he decs not pull hard, hence a light i lad can manage him resasonably well

over ;i lengthy journey, even it unable to extract tlie best from Historic in the concluding stages of a race. (Tp till recently Tresliam lias been trained by T. F. Quinlivan at Hastings. Although late in entering that trainer’s stable, Tresliam showed sonie--1 thing approaching his best form while in Hawke’s Bay. Tresliam is again destined for Trentham, and in future will lie under trainer J. McLaughlin.
