A NARROW MARGIN
VICTORY FOR CANADIAN CONSERVATIVE. KEENLY-CONTESTED BY-ELECTION. (Australian Pross Association —United Service.) Received 10.25 a.m. to-day. VANCOUVER, Dec. 7. A message from Victoria says : With a majority of only 85 out of 11,195 votes, Mr D. B. Piunket( Conservative) defeated Mr M-aeLean in a by-election-, which has aroused more interest than the general election. The premier, Mr Tolmie, who gave up his seat in order toenter provincial politics, had a majority of 2781. Thus huge majority in what has been a Tory stronghold since 1875, lias been cut down. It is regarded as a victory for the Australian treaty, which was the only outside issue dealt with. No fewer than five Cabinet Ministers took part in the campaign.
