CENTRE RECORD BROKEN.

«► POLE VAULT PERFORMANCE. HAWERA ATHLETE’S FEAT. The Rawer a Amateur Athletic Club’s fourth sports meeting of the season was marked by an outstanding pole vault performancea last evening, when L. A. Newall added an inch to the Wanganui-Taranaki Centre record of nine feet established at the centre championships of last season by C. Laurent, of the Hawera Club. Laurent was included in the nominees, but was | unable to attend last evening’s meeting. Newall won the competition with | actual vault of Bft lOin. He was persuaded to make an attempt on the i record, and with his first essay he! cleared the 9ft lin with ease. : Though public attendance was of j meagre dimensions, the increasing interest among competitors in the progressive series for the various club trophies was evinced by comparatively larger fields, the two principal short distance events necessitating division into three heats- and a final. In the running and hurdles events contest for the Burdekin Cup, the evening results placed L. A. Newall at the top of the ladder with 11 points, while S. A. Lay, who was formerly level with Newall for top position with six points, is now equal for second place with S. Shore, who increased his tally to six points. Four new scorers were found in the field events series for the Athol Grant Cup, hut S. A. Lay, who added a quarter point, making a total of 7i , still heads- the list from C. Campbell and L. Hunt with five points each. A notable- feature of the high jump handicap was a tie for third place by four contenders. These included the centi-e champion, A. E. Gilliver, w r ho won the title last season with a jump of sft sin, and the centre record holder, L. A. Newall, who secured that distinction in 1928 by clearing sft 6in. Both registered sft 3in from scratch last evening. The cycling events counting for the Armstrong Cup resulted in a double victory to the hack marker, J. A. Dykes', who thus increased his former lead bv six points and has- now 19 points,' while A. Seed, who caught another four points, drew level with F. O. Brown for second position, the latter two,.both now having 10 points to their credit. The fourth race in the primary schoolboys’ series for the Bone Cup resulted chiefly in B. Brown, of the Hawera Convent, adding three points to the two secured last week. With five points he is now one below the leader, L. Worley, of the Hawera Main School. Both Miss Rita Potts and Muss Eileen Toy improved earlier scores in the contest for Ihe Sargent Cup. the pair mow being on even terms for leading position with six points each. A half-mile walk handicap, won by the centre champion. D. Wills, and a 229 yards handicap for secondary schoolboys, won by B. Thomas, marked the commencement of progressive contests for trophies in those, divisions.
