UiulerSecretary lor D-ohiiiiions, replying to a question in the House of Commons- respecting the commercial treaty between the South African Government and the German Government, saitl that His Majesty’s Government in Great Britain were informed of the negotiations which led to the signature of litis treaty, w hich did'apt come into force ponding i vilification. It provided that gcoil.-, produced or maii'nl'actured in Germany would, on exportation to the Union of South Africa, he entitled to the same tieatment a,s similar goods produced or manufactured in any other country, subject- t<* this proviso: Tlmit in the ease of goods in respect ol which prei'ciential treatment was, under the existing South African legislation, specifically accorded to other parts of British Empire, Germany would not be able to claim ally such minimum rates, or rebates actually granted to other parts of the Empire.
