FIRE AT FRANKTON

HAMILTON, Dec. 5. A fire completely destroyed a billiard saloon leased by Harold Fisher in Commerce Street, Frankton, in the early hours of the morning. Tlie stock and contents were' insured for £SOO. A tobacconist’s shop in tlie same premises was damaged by smoke to the extent of £IOO. Tlie stock was insured for £l5O. A pastrycook’s' premises adjoining were also affected by smoke. The contents were insured for £35. The total damage was estmated: at £BOO.
MAORI WAR VETERANS.
HASTINGS, Dec. 5. A conference of Maori war veterans was held this morning, Major Lomax (Wanganui) presiding over 16 veterans, whose average age was 83. The annual report stated that 57 had died during the year, leaving 279 on the list. _ It was unanimously decided not to join the Empire Veterans’ Association. A vote of thanks was passed to the Government for a : grant of railway passes' to delegates. Major Lomax was re-elected vicepresident.
It was derided to hold the next meeting at Wanganui.
