NOTES AND COMMENTS.

(By “Maecenas.”) To finish a .close third in the Criterion Handicap last Monday, when burdened with the weltre weight of 9.13, can be classed ais little below Reremoana’s best effort, and the great effort deserved a better prize. 'The seven furlongs was traversed in the fast time of 1.25. Admitting that Crown Area is a good sprinter and in the autumn ran out a good mile at Trentham, he appears to be particularly well sold at 2000 guineas. As his purchaser (Mr J. McCombc) is a great better, he will soon get even that big figure back, if able to produce Crown Area at his best. At 8.2 Bcnzora appeared to hold an excellent chance in last Monday’s Criterion 'Handicap decided a't Riecarhon, but, although well placed in !the early stages, he did not finish as well as he was expected to do. When iCimabue ran a close third in the seven furlongs of the Tramway Handicap in Australia last September, he carried 9.3, against the 9.7 with which that great performer Amounis won under. In Monday’s race, Beremoana was asked to concede a stone to Cimabue, and was thus assessed 10 Tbs superior to the Australian crack. The imported Celerity 11. was badly left in the Criterion Handicap at Bio-' carton last Monday, and then finished a close fourth on this form, this mare should run prominently in races to be decided later on. In winning the TTagley Handicap under 9.G Mendip registered a really good performance, and it certainly suggests the son of Bisognc being prominent in some of the more important Handicaps that come up for decision at Christmas or Ncav Year. After the great success of the recent meeting of the "Wellington Racing Club it was iconldently expected that the spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey 'Club would at least be as suc- > eessful a's that of last year, but the I indications of the opening day sug-

gest’S another decline in this club’s receipts. _ Some years ago the leading clubs of the South Island were in a very flourishing condition, -and on the contrary, many racing clubs in this Island were struggling hard to meet their financial obligations. Now the position is completely changed, for while racing clubs like the Auckland and Wellington Racing Clubs are going ahead at a great rate, even the Canterbury and Dunedin Jockey 'Clubs of the (South Island are at. their wits end to come crut of a meeting financially square. The breaking- idoxvn of Roserea, and his -subsequent death, was the end of a disappointing career., while never giving promise of' developing into the high class that his half brothers Ballamena and Limerick reached, those associated with Roserea expected this three-year-old to reach good handicap form, and 'llhs earlier races this season gave colour to such coming true, but a leg infirmity spoilt What chance he possessed of developing good form. With Limerick at his best and Roserea giving indications of reaching a standard thn-t would give aim a chance of capturing one or the rich Derbies in Australia, in What is admitted to be a very weak year, the -prospects of Trainer F. D. Jones and Owner H. A. Knight looked particularly promising at the opening of the current racing season, but in a few short weeks all has chailgcd," 'and with Limerick broken down and Roserea destroyed, Dame Fortune has frowned for once on what can be classed as two of her favourites; of course, Limerick is far from a spent light, and it is only a matter -of Limonds great -son striking form and the will win in an v more races.
