“CHILDHOOD OF SAMUEL.”

A BRIGHT CANTATA. PRESBYTERIAN JUNIOR CHOIR PERFORMANCE. Excellent work has been done by the choir of children which acts as junior choir at the Presbyterian church since it was formed some time, ago, under the guidance of Mr. Charles Lamb. The people of Normanby last night had the opportunity of hearing these songsters, when they gave a.performance of the cantata. “The Childhood of Samuel,” written bv Alfred Moffatt. The cantata opened with a prelude that led into a spirited chorale, “Men and Angels.” Then followed a recitative solo and hymn. Throughout, the work fine contrast was shown in the various numbers. Words and music, too, were most appropriate. The two part choruses were good, and tlie balance, blend, and expression were markedly effective. The alto was well sustained and formed a good counterpoise to the voices of the sopranos'. The best were, perhaps, “Go, tell to Eli’s house,” “Arise ye people-/* and the finale “Glory to There were a considerable number of solos, and all were nicely sung, the fresh young vojces toeing particularly attractive. The soloists were: Sopranos, Miss Alma Bailey, “Sadly once” and “Slumber song”; Miss Audrey McLaren, “And Samuel said”; Miss Elsie Twaddle, “And all Israel”; Master George Russell, “Hoar me, Holv Father”; contraltos, Miss Naomi McNae, “But Eli the High Priest” and “What’s this?” Miss Marcia Sunderland, “And the Lord appeared.” The children did much credit to their conductor and the organist (Mr. L. Rowe). Before the cantata was given a number of choruses and other items were rendered, including “Abide with me” and “The Angel’s story” (soloist Joan Cowie); solos by Marcia Sunderland,' “Just as I am,” Enid Evans “My task,” and Agnes McCallum. There was also a quartette by Misses M. Lamb. N. Matheson, E. Matheson, and E. Twaddle. The audience was most appreciative and gave the young people an excellent reception, thoroughly' enjoying the whole performance.
