MAORI HEALTH CONDITIONS.
1 IMPROVEMENTS IN PAS. TARANAKI COUNCIL MEETING The annual general meeting of the Taranaki Maori Health Council was held at Hawera yesterday. • There were present: Councillors Wiremu Tupito Maruera (chairman), Rinia- Wakarua, Maui Rangihaeata, Rangimarama Tgukee, Taliuata Te Poihi, Rangihuna Pire. An apology for absence was received from Tuhikaka Rape. Other eminent Maoris of Taranaki in attendance were: Tama Te. Aiti, Pire Ngeru, Te Poihi. Whakahihi, Whitianga. Various matters relating to the general welfare of the Maori community of the district comprised the business of the meeting. Subjects dealt with included the determination of the council constitution; recommendations for the improvement of by-laws concerning Maori health; recommendations for the maintenance of peace and morality and the observance of law and order; consideration of means of assisting improvements in various pas, and the furtherance of improvement effected since 1926. Mr Takiwaiora Hooper, native _ health officer for the West Coast district, reported that a. marked improvement had recently been effected in various pas in Taranaki. At the Waiokura Pa (Manaia) a new meeting house, cooking and refreshment compartments and various new buildings had been erect- ( ed and improvements effected since 1926. At the Weriweri * Aotea Pa (Okaiawa) the meeting house had been reconstructed, together with new cooking and refreshment compartments and other improvements. Splendid work, said the health officer, had been clone at 'the Ngatiki Pa. The Taiporohenui Pa was gradually improving and others were fairly goocT. The chairman and other speakers expressed keen appreciation of the services being rendered as the health inspector officer by Mr Hooper who, in carrying out his duties, employed a thorough understanding of Maori customs and the manner in which they should be treated.
