PHENOMENA AT INVERCARGILL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Get. 8. A peculiar phenomenon occurred over a large part of Southland on Saturday afternoon, when a, duSil red .glow was observed in the sky. In s-o-me places it became so- dark at 4 o’clock that artificial light 'had 1 to- be used. On Sunday the footpaths, -roads and houses were found to be lightly coated with rind duet, while motor cars caught in a shower were spotted with. red. It was siu-mined that the visitation was due to big bush fires on the West Coast, or to an eruption. ATTEMPT TO BLOW OPEN SAFE. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 8. In the early hours of this morning an unsuccessful attempt was made to blow .open ‘ the- safe at the office of the Manawatu Flourmilling Company. An explosive was used and the inside of the lock was smashed, . but the levers held the safe closed. The safe contained, in addition to cheques, a small amount of petty cash. EVIDENCE OF FORCE OF GALE. CHRISTCHURCH, Oic.t. 8. The force of the gale at Lyttelton yesterday was sufficient to snap heavy beams and twist iron girders at the wrecked wool shed. In some places even the concrete foundations were torn up. Sonic of the remaining- 'framework will have to bo torn down owing to its badly twisted state before reconstruction. * The contractors will bo 'heavy losers.

C. ‘Minnß, final year R.A., who was educated at Auckland Grammar School; and Air E. E. Boifey, LL.B., educated at the Sa,cried Heart Cblleige. Both, were born in 1907. Minns is a Rugby player, and war? chosen for the first Wa-ratali test.
