THE COST TO BRITAIN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Oct. 6. Sir Kingsley Wood, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Rea.tn, addressing the second of the series or conferences which he is holding with representatives of local authorities to explain the Government’s scheme for the derating of industry and the reform of local government, said that social services were costing the country over £1,000,000 daily. Many ot them were administered by no iewer than six separate organisations, and there was an unanswerable case greater co-ordination. Referring to the criticism that the reform proposals would lessen the interest of the electorates in nninhipal work, lie said he believed the new s.\ stem of block grants would ensure a greater measure ‘of local responsibility. It would certainly make for greater freedom, from the interference of Whitehall in local administration.
