CHILDREN IN FANCY DRESS.

HAWERA MAIN SCHOOL BALL A PRETTY GATHERING. It was a. scene of gaiety with pretty and quaint costumes that made the Winter Show dance hail bright and attractive last night, when the Hawera Main School held the annual children’s fancy dress ball. The hall was crowded by a gathering of eager bright-eyed youngsters, all fully enjoying the function, with parents and friends as interested spectators of the scene. It was estimated that well over three hundred took part in the revels. First there were two grand marches, the tiny ones first and then the' bigger children. The precision with which they went through the “manoeuvres” with the march and countermarch up and down the hall and through the arch of outstretched arms, made a particularly fine scene and was a tribute to the children and to their teachers. The dresses were many and varied and they were led by an appropriate emblem of a dairying country, “The JilacK and White Goo.” The rows and rows of youngsters then enjoyed some folk dances and showed throughout a remarkable sense of rhythm. The organisation was in the hands ol the headmaster and staff and the chairman and members of the school committee and the supper arrangements, a really huge order, were excellently made by a large committee of ladies, ol which Mrs Bates was convenor and Mrs Peter, sen secretary. The decorations were throughout afhistiq and pretty and a credit to the designers. The function was. a very successful and well maintained the fine standard set by similar gatherings in the past. After 'ten o’clock the adults enjoyed a few dances.
