MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

HAWKRA SITTINGS, The usual fortnightly sittings of the Magistrate’s Court at Hawera weie continued before Mr J. S.' Barton, S.M., this morning, when the undermentioned police ami (by-law cases were dealt with. THEFT OP JIISER. Three youths, whose names were ordered iby the Magistrate to (be suppressed, were charged with the theft ot three dozen .bottles of beer valued at 305,. from a private residence. All three, whose ages ranged from 19 to 22 years, were represented by Mr P. O’Dea, and pleaded guilty. Counsel in asking for leniency described the theft as more of a .mad escapade than criminal intent. Sergeant Henry said that with the exception of the elder one (who was ones charged with, drunkenness) nothing was known against them. Mr Barton decided to give each the ■opportunity to make good, and after severely admonishing them as to their future behaviour, ordered one to appear for sentence at the January sittings' of the court, and the two younger boys were admitted to probation for 12 months. Prohibition orders in each case and the accused were ordered to make restitution of the value of the stolen property of 10s each. ■ BREACHES OF BOROUGH BY-LAWS.

For passing another motor vehicle going in the same direction at a speed exceeding six miles per hour, ait tne intersection of High and_ Victoria Streets on September 15, James Haddon, ai native, was fined £1 anu costs 10s. The police did not- press for a heavy penalty and defendant was convicted and discharged. SELLING LIQUOR. AFTER. HOURS. James Dykes, licensee of the Dominion Hotel, pleaded guilty to selling a bottle of beer to one Percy Eastburj after closing hours A Sergeant Henry prosecuting, stator that defendant had been caught redhanded delivering the beer outside the premises which was a deliberate breach •f the licensing law. Defendant, said the sergeant, had been before the court before for selling liquor after hours. Defendant was fined £lO and costs 'os. A, further charge of opening after hours was withdrawn by the police.
