'The engineer said that according to the reguultkms, any spot at the back of the lorry, even only an inch to the right of tlie centre, would comply with tilt' regulations. The councillors agreed that the proper place should be at the extreme right, where it would show on the number plates. 'The matter of offensive trades was briefly considered, as the outcome of a circular letter from the ‘Health Inspector dealing with the registration thereof and suggesting a short by-law t'o deal with s ueh eases.—lt was agreed to submit the matter to the Local Bodies • Association with a view to conjoint action. The Health 'Officer .reported that three cases of diptheria and one of scarlet fever had occurred in the county during the month. ■ . The secretary of the Kaupokonui Dairy Company wrote to ask if the engineer would be allowed to do some metalling and tarring sections of reads —4O yards at Kapuni and at Skeet Road "factory, and portion of roadway into Auroa factory. The engineer said the company had the boulders ready and would cart them out, but asked the council to do the work of crushing and formation. The chairman said the council would be doing the work for its own ratepayers, but the. council must not be. out of pocket by doing so. The engineer referred also to tlie approach to a whey tank at the Oeo Road dairv factory, which ran parallel to the road and was considered to he dangerous. Alterations were to be made by the council Permission was given to Messrs. _E. Bennett and Gopperth to lay a pipe line along the Sutherland. Road under the supervision of the engineer.

Mr. N. Scown asked if the council would put metal to his gate. The engineer said about six chains of metalling would be necessary to* connect up with Mr. Scown’s gate. It was on tlie Lower Normanby Road, and lie was the only person likely to use the road. The cost would be about £SO. The chairman said that to do the work at once the “wear” on the roads carting the metal to the job would cost as much as the work itself. The engineer advised that the. work could not be done in wet weather. It was resolved that a. convertible tractor roller be disposed of, provided a. fair price can be obtained. The matter was left- to the chairman and engineer. HORSE TR AFFIC. Mr Luscombe * had written to the chairman concerning the danger to horse traffic on the liilily parts of county roads. He instanced cases of bouses falling on the Palmer Road. Tlie engineer said that efforts were being made to* obviate the trouble. j Cr. Leslie instanced a case of suohi a thing happening on a level istretch of read. Tlie chairman said they they would have to* face the expenditure necessary to make a roadway for horse traffic in bad places, because after all, these people were . the eouncil’is ratepayers and must be protected. It would mean a fairly large expenditure but the oouneit should do the work peacemeal and the worst places first. Tlie engineer said it was his intention to get shingle to do the cuttings first and lie believed it would pay in the long' run.
