GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.

PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW.

(By “Maecenas.”) The Canterbury Jockey Club' will open its Grand National meeting tomorrow. To many sportsmen this is the most important meeting of the season, although it must be admitted that the fixture is not now looked on as important as was the ease ai few years ago-, iu feature that has been brought about by the strides racing lias made in the North Island, whereas, in the South the spent of galloping has perhaps declined. In spite of these conditions the more important meetings *of the Oaiitedbui-y Jockey Club a.re stil’l. numbered’ amongst those in which the racing world' of our Dominion tire interested.

To-morrow’s l racing will open with the Hunters Hurdles, in which event Loughreai has been awarded tile steadier of 12.9. Oil his excellent performances. on the fiat he has not received a pound too much, hut will need to be a good 1 one to concede the weight to Homemade and Diana’s Lad, both of which go well oyer Hie small battens. Loughrea has 'also been accepted for in tile Trial Hurdles in which event he lias 10.13, ami will possibly run in this event for preference ; Loughrea on the same mark lias not been underrated, and both of tbe top weights will have their work cut out to beat Nucleus, •while Panorama on his best form must also prove troublesome. Aisi usual a, good sized.field, is .engaged in the Cashmere Plate. Sarnia won so decisively at tbe Christchurch Hunt Clubmeeting held last Saturday, that she appears likely to- be one'of the well bached division. Malmsey .wa-s thought good enough to be kept in the AVi liter Cup til! Thursday, and with C. Emerson in the saddle is certain ten be supported in this' event.

The strength of the- dumpers’ Flat field falls short of many former contests l’or flic event, which, as a rule, has given an excellent guide as to what prospects any of (lie -acceptors for the Grand National Hurdle race had, but this year punters will _ know little mo ns even after the decision of the Jumpers’ Flat event. AA’lien at the top of his form last vicar Nukuntai failed under 12.14, and to-morrow .is in with two pounds less, but as the field is: weaker, lie may prove hard to shake off. Gaze at 10.3 appears to be the pick of the handicap. Even with the smart fiejer of nine engaged in the Grand National Steeplechase, the club can be counted lucky, as at one stage it certainly appeared aw if the' field would lie lamentably weak, both in numbers and cbaissi, but as tilings are, the race to-morrow should he quite a. good one. At 12.5. Beau Cavalier appears to have bis full deserts considering' bis repeated:, failures in steeplechases during the last few months” but in to-morrow’s field this gelding must bo respected with all his weight. Pamplona is much, in the boom in the- Far South, but seeing how lie taped, when brought to Riicoarton twelve months ago, it is hard' to favour his chance this year. Tuki and Pouri, at 10.9 each, should have largo followings, a-iul both should! perform well, and of tine pair Tuki may fare best over the stiff fences 1 at Ricoartou. AViltshire is a promising sorb, and providing lie has ordinary luck, lie will surprise many. The Babe is just the sort for this') ‘‘country,’ r 'but as lie lias been unsound and under treatnue-nt for weeks, one cannot recommend him.. Dubious, at 943, .shout’d put up a. big fight, and Matu and Passin’ Through are a- pair of good jumpers; but, to fine the issue down, it certainly points to Tuki., AY ill-shire a-nd Beau Cavalier being the hardest to beat.

For a second-class -steeplechase the Enfield Steeplechase lias drawn acceptors ‘that with experience should prove worthy of greater events. If lie negotiates- the “country” Radiate- will take a power of heating, but perhaps the more experienced Jovial or Royal Wink may be the more reliable .ones for backers.

As usual, the Winter Cup is a> problem for punters to ponder over. The weight and distance may be against nc*k jVliint. but* Tjiboo and Royal Damon appear to harp fair prospects, and the connections of.the last-named are quietly confident. Kniti has not had a race for many weeks, but is

well, and with 11. Reed in the saddle is sure to play a leading part. Bisox and Panther' both-raced! well .at Trcntliain, and should again' satisfy their admirers, but as ."Pantiler is the mostlikely one to show ' iniprovemcn t, he may beat the Hawerarowned mare 1 . Of those lower in the handicap, First Sight, Chelone. and Itoyal-Saxon have recent form ' as' a recommendation, ivnt to sum up Panther, Royal Saxon and Kaiti are a trio that- appeal. A good-sized-field will-, contest the Avonhcad Handicap, 'mid ‘ tlie event bears an open appearance. It stripped at his best discriminate backers will want to support-.: Royal Lineage, ns last season he showed distinct promise and ran well enough. ,in Hawke’s Bay last June to suggest his being an’early, stake earner. Historic and' Pangolin went good races at Trentharti recently, and may give the Hawke’s Bay trained gelding most trouble.
