AN G O-CATHOLICISM UNPOPULAR STATEMENT BY BISHOP OF DURHAM. (Australian Press Association —United Service.) Received 2.15 p.m. to-day. LONDON, July 30. The Bishop of Durham says that the extreme unpopularity of AngloCatholieism as disclosed in the debate in the House of Commons merits the gravest consideration o.f AngloCatholic clergy. It had created such a dead weight of suspicion and dislike against themselves that their good influence must largely he paralysed. * “l never concealed the l>elief that the clergy’s .lawlessness discredited their spiritual claims and lessened their moral influence,” ho said. “Lawlessness has deyeloned a cunning so phistry, implying legal obligations and even the ordination vows of the validity of nil faith, and is infecting the very sanctity of truth. The character of the Parliamentary discussions carries the subject into larger connections. It is freelv admitted that establishment itself is jeopardised. The agitation against the revised Prayer Book has rekindled the fires of religious passion to an unexpected degree.”
