FIRE.
WOOLSHED AT LYTTELTON DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s woolslieds at Lyttelton were destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. The brigade was called at 2.25 p.m., but on arrival it was seen there was little chance or saving the wool store, and efforts were concentrated on saving the spirit bond stores of Forbes and' Co. The shed was 130 ft by 110 ft., and had an extension built on to it last year. Fortunately, at this season of the year it was practically empty, but it ’ did contain 500 bales of wool, four casks of tallow, and a Valuable wool dumping plant with, engine. The wool and tallow burned fiercely, throwing up dense volumes of smoke, and within ail hour the whole building was burned to the ground. The cause of the fire is unknown. Workmen are not allowed to smoke in the building and there were no fires or naked lights. It is believed the wool, tallow, and store were adequately insured, but there will be a loss on the dumping plant. The damage amounts to £IO,OOO.
The need for protection against fire -•>ss is obvious. Consult the Mercantile and General Insurance 'Company, i.tri. Local agent: E. llardley, Grand Theatre. Building, Hawera. ’Phone 2174 —Advt.
