FIRE IN ARGYLE STREET

OCCUPANTS NARROW ESCAPE BRIGADE! MAKES GOOD SAVE. At ten minutes past four tbi-s morning, the Hawera Eire Brigade received ■a call to a seven-roomed house in Ail-gyle Street, owned by E. L. Hiram, ot Levin, and occupied by Airs Hastings Braddell. , .. , The fire bad a good lmld wlion iirst discovered, and on the brigade’s arrival flames were bursting through the dining room window, ,and the interior ol the building at the rear was .like a furnace. The boarders, of whom there were five, had a trying experience while attempting to save their effects, and good work wais done by one young fatly Whose presence of mind was the means of preventing more serious consequences. Although most of the hoarders saved their personal effects, one occupant, who had returned to save effects, was partially overcome by smoke, being assisted out by a fireman. Another boarder, who had left his room to warn the others, returned to save his belongings. As ho readied liis room the flames burst in at the door and ceiling and he had to make a hurried exit through a window. The brigade did some smart work, making a good save, although the dining room and kitchen were completely gutted, and the contents destroyed, including a piano and some valuable books. The other rooms and furniture were damaged by smoke The house was insured' for £BOO, and the insurances, on the-- furniture are £330. At the time of the outbreak, Airs Braddell and her son were away on a visit to Manaia. Mr Boyd, one of the boarders, had his personal effects covered by insurance for £75. „ Ai bungalow' next door to tho soeno ot the fire appeared to be threatened in the early stages, but the firemen gave their first attention to saving it and, owing to the absence of any wind, were soon able to place the adjoining prOcporty out of danger.
