NEW STEEL FOR CARS.

A revolution in the motor car and aeroplane engine industry is foreshadowed by the perfecting of a new t.,pe of unwearable steel, which is being applied to the cylinders of motor engines (states a Paris message to the London papers of May 3). The secret of the steel's hardness -is a treatment by ammonia, which gives, it a surface that cannot be filed. After 22,000 miles running the cylinders of the ordinary motor car show a high degree of wear and tear, hut cylinders made of the new ammonia steel show only 2 per cent, usage in a like test. The consumption of oil is less than oije-third of that in the ordinary motor. In the- case of an aeroplane the life of the engine is.it is claimed. prolonged greatly.
