FAREWELL SOCIAL

A farewell and presentation was extended to, Mrs J> At. Levings, her two sons and, niece at the residence of Mps It. Hughes on Saturday night uu. the eve of tiiei'C departure for A-iustraiiia.. Jueie was a very Tange -assemblage piesent- from all parts oh the district, showing this high esteem in which the depa,rting guest® were held. A splendid evening wins spent in carets, vocal item® and dancing, and a isumptuous supper wa.s provided. During tne evening Air A, Iyruse- presented Mrs Levinas- with a travelling rug, Air Arthur Levings with a, caise of pipes,''Mr Harry Levings with a, travelliihg bag and bliss Scott with a, hand baig. In making the presentation on behalf of their many friends, Mr Kruse eulogised the high C'Vteem in which the guests wiere held, and wished them every success in Australia;.* Three hearty cheer© were given and, “Foil- They aun jolly Good. Fellows” was isong. Mr Arthur. Levings -suitably responded on behalf of his mother and the ether guests. Other speakers were Messrs' N. K. McLeod and A. Hughes. Vocal items were given by Misses Hughes. Whalen, Mrs A. McCracken, and Mr J. Borne and a splendid evening was concluded 1 by .singing Auld Lang Syne. FUNERAL.

The remains of the .late Mr Bernard McKenna, were -laid to nest on Tuesday afternoon in the Manada Cemetery, when tlheie was a large assemblage of citizens- of Manaia and. district present to pay their last respects to a most popular young apian, His, death under such tragic circumstances, caused by a. kick from a. horse., was much revetted. Requiem Mass was said yesterday morning at 9 a.m. by the Rev. Father O’Dwyer, who also, conducted the services at the. church prior to the funeral and at the grave! Many beautiful wreaths were placed on the 'casket, including one from the Hibernian Society. of which, ho. was a, .member. The Hibernians, in regalia, were present at the funeral. The nui'l-beareiis weed six of deceased’s companions, who came out from Ireland with. him. and were born within a, few miles' of each other. They wore Messrs A. Conway, J. Ander-on. P. McGovern, J. McLaughlin, D. MeC'auglev and I. MeM ahon.
