'MUCH LARGER. THAN AORANGI

Some months ago it was announced that the Union Company had decided to Jiave built a new ship for the Vancouver mail service, to run in conjunction with the Aorangi Up to the present no details of the proposed new vessel are available, but islie will be considerably larger than the Aorangi. A hint as to the size of the ship was given in the Sydney “Morning Herald” when it was stated that she would be the same length as the White Star liner Ceramic, but would be loft. Sin. a ider. The Ceramic is a ship of 48,481 tons gross register, 655.1 ieet in length (between perpendiculars), and 69.-tft in breadth. The new Union liner therefore will be 655tt. in length and 85ft. in breadth, and well over 22,G0U tons gloss register The Aorangi is 680; t. long (netween perpendicular) and 72ift. wide, iier gross tonnage 17,491 tons. “With the constant increase in the size of liner's trading to Sydney—the crient steamer Orontes now building will be of 22,01)0 tons register—the problem of docking facilities at this port is becoming more pronounced,” remarks the Sydney Morning Herald, which says, “The new liner being built to the order of the Union Company for tlie service between Sydney and Vancouver will have a beam of 85ft. and at present, it is stated, there is not a dock in Australia that could take her. I’o meet the requirements of tlie future it has been decided to extend the great Sutherland dock at Cockatoo Island. At present the dock lias a length of 602 ft. and a width of 84ft. The length is to be extended to 690 ft. and the width will be increased 4ft. Messrs. W. Solomon and Sons have been given the contract for the excavation work, which will commence at once, and occupy about six months.
