_ A.t the annual meeting of the Eltham Fire Brigade last evening, Superintendent. H. A. Nuttall stated that fully 70 par cent, of fires in New Zealand were caused through, the careless bestowal of lighted cigarette ends, and recounted several instances of fires caused by this means within hi,® own evnerienro
in Elth-am. The superintendent considered that the time had arrived when the general public? should be educated in lire preventive measures. The majority of fires, he said, were the outcome of pure carelessness. Mr Nevilo M. '' Henderson, 0.M.G.. has been appointed envoy-extraordinary and • minister plenipotentiary to the French republic, states a British official wireless message. He will thus be second in command to the new ambassador, 'Sir William Tyrrell. Since November, 1924, Mr Henderson has been minister plenipotentiary in Egypt. As a result of a motor-van colliding | with an electric light pole in Waimea Road, on Saturday evening, George Briggs, a married resident of Tahuna-| nui, is in hospital, in a. serious condition, having a fractured skull and a broken jaw, states a Press Association message . from Nelson. The other occupant of the van, Leo Cirexswell, was not seriously hurt. A.t the ordinary meeting of the Eltfiam Fire Brigade, prior to the annual meeting last night, general satisfaction
was expressed at the recovery of Superintendent H. A. Nuttall from the effects of hits recent accident and the fact that he was able t 0 conduct the bitsineSiSl of the brigade. In acknowledging the kindly expressions of those present, Superintendent Nuttall thanked the brigade for postponing the annual meeting to permit of his attendance. He lvacl not, he said, missed an annual meeting during the past twenty-six years, and he would not care to commence now..
An old and respected settler of South Taranaki, Mrs. Hurrell, wife of Mr. George Hurrell, of Ararat*, passed away at Hawera. on Monday. Mrs. Hurrell had with her husband and family lived at Ararat a for 34 years, being the earliest settlers to take up land in that locality. Coming to Taranaki 4G years ago. Mr,, and Sirs. Hurrell settled first at Eltham, taking up hush land in that district, and then, after a short period at Stratford and Mangatoki, they settled in Ararat*, where they had lived till how. Sirs. Hurrell w.as held in high eisteem by all the settlers on the road. She was horn at Makara (Wellington), her father, the late Sir. G. Shotter, being one of the earliest settlers, arriving from England on the ship Gertrude in 1841. After leaving Wellington, she was at Feilding and then at Mart on, just prior to coming to Taranaki. She leaves her husband and a family of three—Mrs. W. T. Seed, of Ala ta pi i, and Messrs. 0. W. Hurrell and H.
Hurrell, to mourn her loss. With them will lie felt deep sympathy in their sorrow. The funeral will take nlace at Eltham to-morrow (Wednesday'), at 2 p.m.
