STAN. LAY’S RECORD.

OTHER FIGURES AWAITING RECOGNITION.

“Miler,” in the “New Zealand Sportsman,” writes in reference to Stan. Lay's recent javelin record at Stamford Bridge, which has been heralded as a world’s record by a number of New Zealand athletic writers. The statement is as follows: “At the English A.A.A. championships, held at Stamford Bridge, Stan. Lay, New Zealand”s star javelin thrower, won the English title with his best throw to date. Acclaimed as a world’s record—222ft 9in —‘Miler’ would point out that in the latest record books there are two better performances. The official world’s record stands to the credit of Gunnar Lindstrom, of Sweden, with 218 ft 61-in, but two other throws which will be dealt with by the International Athletic Federation are: 224 ft llin by F. Myrra, of Finland, and 229 ft 3 l-6in by Pentilla, also of Finland. Both these throws were established in perfect conditions, and will doubtless receive official recognition when submitted to the T.A.A.F.

“Lay has struck form at the right time, and his magnificent physique and chest development have been the subject of much favourable, comment- by leading athletic authorities in England. When the Olympic Games are concluded it will occasion much surprise in England if Stan. Lay line up to receive his wreath of laurel and handshake from the King of the. Netherlands.” Commenting on this, our contributor “Physical Culturist” writes : “It is not surprising to learn the Hawera representative’s physique has received favourable comment in England. He is proportionate!v built, although not finite’ even in all measurements, and has muscular development which is at once flexible and sprinsv without the aid of massage. Providing no unforeseen circumstances arise, I am confident- 230 ft will he within Ms limit at Amsterdam.”
