KAPONGA CIVIC AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD

The monthly meeting of theKaponga Town Board was held last evening, there-being present: Commissioners R. A. Law (in the chair), G. E. Betts, J. 3. Charters, J. P. Gibson, and A. J. Herbert. Leave of absence was granted to the chairman of the board (Mr. A. R.. Bates). ENGINEER’S REPORT. The electrical engineer (Mr. T. B. Merson) reported on operations fox- the month in bis department as follows : Power-houses.—Both stations have operated continuously during the month without electrical or mechanical defects . ' No. 2 station has been shut down foi* a complete overhaul, and the outer area is now being supplied with energy from the Taranki Power Board’s system. . Reticulation: —Good progress is being made with the reconstruction programme. Tile gang lia® ’been 1 engaged on the section of line between the Ivaupokonui bridge and Rowan Road. All the poles have been moved to a position nearer the property alignments, and a number of 30ft. silver pine pole replacements have been made. New high tension cables are being erected on this section, and it is anticipated this work will be completed by the end of the present week. Upon the completion of this work a start will be made on new consumers’ service lines and additional transformer stations. Headworks.—The scour valve and the intake gate at No. 2 dam have never proved satisfactory. This defect is being remedied, and new lifting gear on both locations is at present being installed. Poles.—lt has been necessary to purchase a further quantity of assorted silver pine poles, principally for consumers’ service lines. HEALTH REPORT. The .sanitary inspector (Mr, R. Gooding) reported on health matters as follows : Two cases of scarlet fever occurred in tfie board’s district during June. All measures to ensure against _its spread were taken. Attention is drawn to the need of cleaning up the rubbish depot and making provision to facilitate the tipping of rubbish. Particular care was necessary in the timing of the automatic flashers to guard against flooding the septic tanks. The foiHMiiaii’s report dealt with the gravelling of Kuri Street and Kaponga Road, which have been completed with the exception of a little top-dressing; the coating of the footpath from the post office to the town halt —a. very satisfactory job, which will, however, require a top-dressing when other works in hand are completed ; the clearing of all refuse from, the septic .tank, which is now working satisfactorily. The foreman is now engaged in tree planting on the Domain. The reports were adopted. GENERAL. In. response to an application from tb© executive of the Kapongai Cbrist-

mas carnival committee for the free use of the town ball for the purpose® of a citizens’ ball in aid of the carnival funds, it was decided to .remit the usual hall rent. Accounts amounting to £SOO were passed for payment.
