CIVIC AFFAIRS.

H.VWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Hawera. Borough Council was held last evening, the following being present : The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey), Crs. A. Reid, W. R. Butler, G. J. Bay-ley, J. M. Townsend, E. Morrissey, W. G. Simpson, R. IT. Leece, and \V. G. St ran <re An apology for absence* was rereived from Cr. IV. G. Walklev-. ENG INEER ’ S R EPORT. In the course of his report the borough engineer referred to the purchase of bitumen at a satisfactory price. He reported that work on the'town planning programme had been commenced. The” civic survey may required the levels of all the streets in the-borough. These have all to -he reduced to a common datum. There are about 14 miles of levels to be taken, and the work will, -at tins time of year, occupy s-ome time. Bench mark spilces- have been placed at every intersection of streets. Four of these will lie. in concrete to act as reference bench marks. The levelling has been commenced. Some communication lias been maintained with the Director of Town Planning in regard to the minimum. requirements possible. At present it is mostly technical, but on receipt of letter iii reply to my last letter I will pl a'mb- tTio corre spon dence* before the council for its information.

LIBRARIAN’S REPORT. Miss M. Nowlawl (librarian) reported that 15 new members had joined during the mouth and 10' left. At the first of the month the number was 548, just five ahead of June, 1927. Fifty-one new books were bought. As the card index system used for cataloguing the books is absolutely crowded out, the librarian requested the purchase of further boxes.

The engineer’s progress report on work done in the.borough during the month of June was received and adopted. The borough inspector reported . that during the month of June four cases of scarlet fevbr were notifiecl and had received attention. Eight plumbing jobs were inspected' and passed, and three drains totalling 168 feet were tested and passed. During house inspection 40 -premises were visited. During the month eight building permit» were issued to a total value of £844. Dog registrations for June amounted to £1 10s-. Following upon considerable discussion on the South Road railway crossing. it was decided to write to the Railway Department to ascertain when the department was going to proceed with the completion of the crossing. Accounts amounting to £4309 9s lid were passed for payment.
