THE WINTER SHOW

THE CLOSING DAY. LARGE, ATTENDANCES. The inclement weather which prevailed yesterday did not prevent the people of "the town and district visiting the A''inter Show, which last night concluded its seven-day session, during which it was visited by many thousands from all over the province and from many centres outside the bounds of Taranaki. There, have been gay crowds in the building every night, but 'last night’s throng was one of the greatest and served to give, as it were, a sendoff to the attractions of the show. Right up till 11 o’clock the people crowded the buildings and left with happy recollections of the. excitement and the interest and the attraction® of the 1928 show. A feature, of the 'allow has* been the mim'ber of loen.l societies 'vvlii-clx weare represented. Stalls were run by thj? Plunkpt Society ladies (a, hoopla), the Boy Scouts, the Operatic Society, and the Automobile Association, while the display of manual work of school children from Hawera, Eltbam and Mali a,ia was such as to excite much admiration and interest. The 'Government Departments Agriculture, Railways, Publicity and Tourist —have been able to show the people the good work being done by them. Tb? Show is over, and a® soon as the doors closed many of the exhibitors got to work on the operation of dismantling and they worked far on into, the night so us! to get away early to-'day. The resul t of tlxeir activity could lie seen in the disappearance altogether of mam of them from the building. The re* mainder attacked the work this morning., and a look round, the halls disclosed a dozen or more lorries mianipua/ting a devious ooursie a'ong the nar row passages between the rows, men working with hammer and screwdriver and wrench, taking down fittings and exhibits and carefully packing them all into specially prepared cases which accompany them from show to show. The life of the men in charge at this time of the vear, when winter shows are in reason, is made up of constant change —one week here, a day or two mucking and travelling, and then to another show, unpacking, and preparing for the crowds of the next district. It- Is a special - iob, this exhibiting at shows, and demands much organisation and method. The final return® at the turnstiles show that there have geen good attendances, despite the very' unfavourable weather pervading on several days. The hon. treasurer and auditor we—busy in company with two bank officials after each session, making up fill© returns and preparing for banking next day.
