MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
HAWERA SITTINGS. The fortnightly sittings of the Hawera -Magistrate’s Court were continued this morning before M.r ,T. S. Barton, S.M. A considerable number of cyclists were before the court for breaches of the by-laws. RIDING WITHOUT LIGHTS. For riding cycles without lights -within the borough at night, Albert .Tames Ryan, Egbert James Rawcllffe, Desmond .Hughe<s, Richard Cole, Henry Warcup, Th'onVaS Allen and William Entwistle were each fined £1 and costs 10s. Hilda Squire, for riding on the footpath, was ordered to pay 7s fid and costs 10s. BREACH OF MOTOR REGULATIONS Fr'aneis Gordon Eiffes, appeared voluntary to answer a breach of the motor regulations (carrying a passenger on the pillion seat wh ! o was not facing the correct way as required by the regulation). Being the fir'st ca-se of .tlcis kind under the new regulations, the magi striate convicted defendant and ordered him to .pay cost-s, which amounted to 3s. DRUNK IN CHARGE OF CAR.
Alexander Phillips, plumber, of Hawera, who whs represented (by Mr P. O’Dea, was charged that on the evenin. o- of June 30 he was intoxicated Whilst in charge of a motor ear, thereby causing a collision with another motorist, both cars -being damaged as a result. Mr .O’Dea pleaded guilty on behalf of defendant, and asked that his license be not cancelled, and suggested that a -prohibition order would be in the best interests of his client, adding that his business was -chiefly in the country district, and to be debarred from driving his -car would create hardship. Defendant had five dependants, the youngest of whom was ten years of age. Mr Barton declared that the public must be protected and inflicted a fine of £lO and ordyred the cancellation of the driver’s license for 18 months. HANGER-ON AT SHOW'S.
Frank Fitzwilliam, who described himself a's a showman, was charged with assaulting Austin Hafit yesterday in Princes Street. iSergdant. Henry said that accused was really a hangeron at the various shows throughout the -country, and was a menace t-o decent showmen. Accused had a list of ten previous convictions, -which included false pretences, theft -and being an idle and disorderly -person. 'The magistrate said the present charge was not a serious one, but in view of accused’s- previous list of convictions, a fine would not. meet the case. One month ’s imprisonment with hard la'oour was imposed. A Maori youth, named Charlie Bokau, for being drunk in Princes : S‘t. yesterday, wa-s convicted and fined 12s fid and ordered to pay taxi hire 2s fid.
