The efforts of mankind to-day in the world of construction arc towards immense size. We read of the launching of the greatest warship ever built, the laying down of the keel of the largest ocean liner the world will ever have have seen, the building ,of a dam that successfully controls flic flood waters of the mighty Nile, the completion of a leviathan air-liner, and many other great works of colossal prop'o rtions. And the Americans, with characteristic initiative and enterprise, have developed the construction of buildings in a way that makes the greatest oldworld structures appear by comparison small and insignificant. But even their present immense buildings are to be dwarfed .by the construction of the “World’s largest sky-Scraper ’’ in Boston, a building that, while it will not tower to the heaven's like the Woolworth Buildings in New York, by its Vast extent will suggest not so much a site as a self-contained city. This huge structure will be of only twentyeight storeys, but by broadening the base instead of extending the height, it will have a cubic content of 20,000,000 feet, giving it twice the capacity of the present largest building. The architect’s drawings shows a structure of striking dignity with a massive plinth-like base, from the centre of which rises t'he essentially sky-scraping portion of the fabric like a mountain peak towering above the surrounding plateau. There will be, undoubtedly, a massive grandeur about the building, suggesting a modern embodiment, of disciplined strength that attracts by its very massiveness. As for the internal arrangements, they are to be as- could be expected, in proportion to the magnificence of the exterior. 'Two subbasements will contain garage accommodation for the tenants’ ears, noth a capacity of 3000 vehicles, and Connection With a railway will be provided by a tunnel, thus enabling freight deliveries to be made without adding to the congestion of street traffic. An English paper, in commenting on this traffic development, said that, short of a subterranean canal that would admit of ocean liners steaming directly into the cellars of this mammoth structure “it is difficult to imagine a more .tremendous gesture in the way of traffic control.’’ When -completed, this huge building will be '.almost a self-contained city, and point is given to the humorous suggestion that it ought to ,bo adopted as ,a new State in the Union.
