PETROL TAX COUNTY COUNCIL CLAIMS.

Tire Minister of Public Works has been asked by Mr J. It. Hamilton (Awairua) if the Government will consider handing over to county councils the same as is done to boroughs, their respective quotas of the petrol tax, to be spent for the benefit of the ratepayers and the public generally. The questioner added that tills request was being made owing to the intense dissatisfaction with the manner in whioli the Main Highways Board was declaring secondary highways, in distributing the benefits of the petrol tax, and in his opinion tliere were no better quai’afiod men capable of spending this money to good advantage than those elected to county councils, because of their susperior local knowledge. Hanan, Dr. W. E. Collins and Hon. W. Stewart. Sir William Hall-Jones was granted one month’s leave. Sir James Aden three days, and the Hon, E. H. Clark two weeks on account of illness in hi® family, and the Hon, E. Newman three days on account of urgent public business. The Hon. G. M. Thomson gave notice to move to introduce the Captive Birds Shooting Prohibition Bill. The Council adjourned at 3.30 until 2.30 p.m. to-morrow after passing the usual motions of sympathy in the death of deceased members.
