DAWSON FALLS NOTES.
(By “Snowline.”)
The shortest day of. the year was marked by the first snowfall of the season. The winter Ims been very mild until now. Usually we look for snow during the last weeks of Alay. The mountain on Saturday was a beautiful sight with its glistening, newly-fallen, powderly coat of snow ; which extended downwards to the mile and a half radius line. The first snowfall is always hailed with delight by the family and. guest-s at the hostel, and snowballing, sliding, .sledging, and the building of -snow houses and men the chief occupation of the day. Several parties arrived early prepared to riotin the novelty of a six-inch snowfall. The atmosphere after the snow had ceased to fall was wonderfully clear, and the outlines of the South Island peeping over the violet-toned band, which represents nearly 100 miles of ocean, was- distinctly visible. Quite, a number of private cars and a large bus from Stratford visited Dawson Falls on Sunday, but the rapidly thawing snow was not so pleasant 'to play around in as on the preceding day. Visitors to the mountain house were; Mr. and Airs. Ives (Christchurch), Misses 1 Bagnall (Auckland), Air. and Airs Carey, ‘Airis Alavis Carey. (Eltham). Mr. Allan Sutherland (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Smith (Raw.hitiroa). Misses M. G. Renshaw arid L. W. Bonrke (Auckand), Mrs. Alan Bates. Misses Huggins (Kaponga), Air. and: Airs.
