HAWERA CIVIC AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. ROUTINE REPORTS. Tlie monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was hold last evening. There wore present: The Mayor (Mr. E. A. Paccy), and Crs. A. Reid, W. Butler, E. Morrissey, W. G. Simpson, and W. G. Strange. Apologies for absence were received from Cns. W. G. Walk ley, G. J. Bay ley and R. H. Lecce.

Recommendations made, inter alia, by the General Committee were adopted as follow: That the report from Naumai Park Committee be received and question of grant considered when dealing with annual estimates; that the renewal of second-hand dealer’s license be granted to Mrs. L. M. Parsonson; that application by Salvation Army for permission (1) to use Park for Wanganui Songster Brigade on Sunday, July 1, and (2) to collect outside Winter Show be granted subject [to the usual conditions; that sketch plan: of proposed alterations at library as prepared by Messrs. Duffill and Gibson be referred to the Library Committee for consideration; that as work at Park does not now necessitate theemployment of four persons, the services of one be dispensed with as from July 5 ; that matter of procuring material for repairs to fernery be' left in hands of chairman of reserves, with power to act; that chairman of reserves be empowered to act relative to fencing at Turuturumokai ;■ that the engineer be instructed' to proceed: wth the requrements under Town Planning Act, and that matter he confined to bare necessities; that concrete bed two feet wide be laid round the merry-go-round at Park.

Recommendations, made, inter alia, by the Works Committee were' adopted as follow: That C. E. Kelly's application to erect tent during show week be granted subject to> complaince with inspector’s requirements; that relaxation be granted E. J. Hodren to allow of erection of motor shed on side boundary line>; that application by Tawhiti School Committee re signs to motorists be' granted, the inspector to attend to matter and decide position of signs; that parking area on southern side of High Street be metalled to half-way along P.O, frontage' in Albion Street. The borough inspector (Mr L: Hunt) reported inter alia as follows : infectious Diseases;- —A total! of 10 were notified as follows : Scarlet fever 7, pulmonary tuberculosis 2, diphtheria 1. Seven plumbing jobs were inspected and passed. One drain totalling 90 feet was inspected and passed. Seventy premises were inspected, mostly licensed premises tinder the. Health Act. Sixteen building permits were issued to.' a total value qf £2738. Drivers’ licenses, 36 were issued. Race, traffic was well conducted on both, days of the meeting, not accidents being reported. Only four assistants were put on for this meeting, and this number he thought would be sufficient for future meetings.

The librarian. Miss F. Newland, reported that the number of members now on the lisu is 542, being an increase of 12 over May, 1927. The abattoir report islcated that 23 bullocks-, 81 cows, 56 heifers, 434 sheep, 41 lambs, 18 calves, and 121 pigs wore slaughtered during the month. Total fees for two months ended Mav 31 are £6 13s 3d less than those for corresponding period of last financial year.
