SOCIAL EVENING
Mr. and Mrs. .W. E. Tayler entertained a large number of friends in the Alton Hall to an “evening” in- honour of their daughter Ivy, who> is to be married: this week. The hall and stage was nicely arranged, and- a very happy evening was spent. . Miss Taylor's popularity could* best he judged ■ by' the number of friends who had gathered from far and near to wish her the very best in life. Miss Tayler received many wedding pre,septs, which were on view on the stage, some being from friends and relations from Australia.
The following contributed various vocal and musical items during the evening: Mrs. Masters, Mrs. Barclay, Miss Sutherland, Miss Harvey, Miss Elsie Gibbs, Miss Ivy Tayler,- Miss O’Sullivan, and Miss' Alice Gibbs. Dancing and . competitions were continued, and everyone voted the gathering an outstanding success. Mrs. Clemance won the novelty competition, Master Anderson being second. A peanut balancing race was won by Mrs. A. J. Gibbs. Mr. S. A. Couchman carried out-the duties of M.C., and the dance music as supplied by Miss Hurley was appreciated by all.
FOOTBALL BALL. The-Alton Football Club held a plain and- fancy dress ball last Thursday, and it proved a. thorough success, and the club funds will benefit considerably. A committee, consisting of Mrs. A. J. Gibbs, Mrs. -MeDonald, and Mr. D. Hurley, judged the costumes, and awarded the following prize-winners: Ladies, Miss Powell and Miss D. Soo-wn; men, Mr. G. Craft and Mr. L. Corkill. SUNDAY SCHOOL. On Friday the Alton Sunday School held its annual evening, and. a jolly time was spent, the only feature to mar the enjoyment of the occasion being an unfortunate accident experienced by Neil Sutherland, Just before, the games commenced , the little fellow slipped on the floor and fell, striking his head. Suffering front concussion, he was given medical assistance, and lie has now practically recovered. GENERAL. There have been a number of changes’ in this, district this winter. Mi*. G. Hooper has moved to Opunake, Mr. Anderson to Pate a, Mr. H. Amon to Kaponga. Mr. Albert Hodge expects to lie leaving here for Waverley about the end- of this month, and Mr. Sam Moreland- will most likely go to Hawera. Messrs. A. J. Armstrong and E. Burnand have just arrived back from a. trip to Waikato. A shooting party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. F. "Nickel, * J. Kettles and A. Scown are at present at Morrinsville, and report having had good sport. The Alton Gun Club is- holding its second shoot tor the Leece Challenge Cup on Wednesday, and a good day’s sport is assured. - Mr. F. T. Oliver and Master James Oliver have just returned from a trip to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. N.. Mit hell are the quests -of Mrs. A. J- - Gibbs. Mr. Len. Tarrant has just returned :rom a trip to Melbourne. Mi*. H. A. Sutherland is at present unending a few days in Palmerston North,
