TURUTURU MOKAI RESERVE.

PROPOSED MEMORIAL

REQUEST FOR SUBSIDY

In reply to its representations concerning the proposal to erect a suitable memorial on the Turuturumokai . Reserve, the Hawera Borough Council received a letter from the Minister of Lands (the. Hon. A. D. AfcLeod) at the council’s meeting last evening intimating that consideration of the question of subsidy would be given when the estimates for the coming session were being framed. The contribution of £lO by Mr. J. G. Beamish towards the memorial was acknowledged with thanks in the report of the general committee to the council. A report presented to the council stated that at a meeting of the Turuturumokai Committee, held on Alay 30 on the reserve, there were present the Mayor (Air. E. A. Pacey), Miss Buchanan, Airs. Baker, Alessiis. B. C. Lysaght, W. G. Walkley, E. ATorrissey and J. AJ. Townsend (chair). Air. -T. Finlay attended and pointed 1 out the .spot where the engagement took place, and it was here that the C. C. Woods memorial was suggested to be placed. The committee went over the whole of the reserve, and found that many of the native trees planted had lieen eaten by goats or cattle, while many •others had 1 died out *. of the remainder quite a number were flourishing, hut many were showing lack of care. It was resolved that the Public Trustee be written to and asked to have the gorse grubbed on a portion of the reserve; also to pay half the cost of putting dividing fences in order. Air. and Airs. Beamish and M r THnlav attended a meeting held on ■Tune 7, and photographs were shown of various monuments which bad been erected. Those, together with a letter and sketch submitted by Messrs. D’Mfili and Gibson, were considered. Air. Beamish finally stated his preference f or Messrs. Dnffill and Gibson’s design. p-ovided the matter could be financed. It. was resolved that a sket h be submitted to the Minister in 'Largo of scenery preservation and application made for subsidy.
