HEAVY RAIN IN CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June IS. Light nain fell over Canterbury on Saturday, increasing in volume by the evening. Yesterday there was a continuous downpour, that became torrential in the afternoon, and still shows no signs of clearing. From 9.30 a.m. yesterday to 9.30 o’clock this morning 1.7 S inches fell. Tlhe total rainfall since Friday is over three inches. MItDURA’S CREW. UNIONISTS BEING ENGAGED. R&oeived 10.35 a.m. to-day. BRISBANE, June.lß. The volunteer crew of the Mil dura was paid off and /unionists are being engaged. The wharf labourers are now prepared to unload her. TUBERCULOSIS COMMISSION. WAIPUKURAU, June 18. Members of the Tuberculosis Commission who visited Pukeora Sanatorium during the week-end, hearing the evidence of the medical superintendent and seeing every patient left last evening for Palmerston North, en route to Auckland. WHALE ASHORE AT THAMES. THAMES. Juno 18. A whale, measuring 74 feet in length and 14 feet in height came nip the Firth of the Thames yesterday was stranded on a shell bank in the Waih’ou River near Thames. It was later hauled up on the beach, where it attracted a. lot of attention.
