FALSE PRETENCES,
YOUNG MAN CHARGED
Ernest- William Sampson, 23 years of age, was charged before Messrs. L. A. Bone and J. M. Townsend, J’s.P., at the Police Court this morning with obtaining three gallons of benzine from Edwin Hall Thomas' at Eltham on November 24, ■ 1927, by false pretences, also with stealing a pair of trousers valued at £1 10s at Wanganui on January 20, 1928. Aoording to the police, he obtained the benzine by stating that he wa.s employed by the Gane Milking Machine Company at Hawera, but it was ascertained thta he was not employed by the firm named. With reference to the theft of the trousers at Wanganui, accused represented that he was in the employ of the Gane Company and that lie was on transfer to Wanganui. Tlie trousers were the property of a fellow boarder, and had been pawned for ss. When arrested accused liad £l.odd in his possession. On the application of Sergeant Henry the court ordered that the pawnbroker was to be reimbursed and the benzine valued at 6s was to be paid for by accused. Sergeant Henry stated that in 1923 accused was sentenced to three years’ probation for false pretences, and for false pretences at Te Kuiti accused had served one month’s imprisonment. A fine of £5 on each charge was imposed, in default months’ imprisonment. *
