NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By -‘Maecenas.”)

Like Lean Cavalier, the Great Northern and Winter Steeplechase winner Glendowie is engaged in both steeplechases and flat events at the Te Kuiti meeting. With such rich events as the Wellington Steeplechase, and the Grand National not far away, these proxicient jumpers may bo raced in flat x-aces. **~ # * *

Besides being nominated for the steeplechase e»ents at the To Kuiti meeting. Beau Cavalier also figures in some of the flat races. -X- * •* * -K-

While many racing clubs are having a hard time trying to finance their meetings, there ax-e other clubs desirjus of securing additional days for racing. In all twenty clubs are asking or additional days. Included in this number is the Stratford Racing Club, xr November 17; the Taranaki JockeyClub is asking for a day on September I; the Opunake Racing Club is desirous of securing a day on October 26, while the Waverier Racing Club is seeking a day on June 2if one is available. It says much for racing in this part of the Dominion that clubs are courageous enough to seek more race days. A big asset, which practically assures goodsized fields, is the large number of horses trained in or adjacent to our province. Even with such advantage it is doubt u] if a one-day meeting will show any prolit. « * * •» * a

The Australian bred gelding, Bay High ton, which was forced into open class through winning a hack event at Ellenslie, is at present being qualified for hunter events. * * * * *-

Loughrea which was recognised as one of our best flat - performers a few seasons ago, and who has a- Wellingt n and Dunedin Cup to his credit, is eing “schooled” lor hui-dle races. If l.oughrea takes kindly- to this department o, racing, a Grand National should not he beyond his capabilities. * * K *• *

The nominations received for their classio races by the Canterbury Jockey , Club fall short of previous- yeai's. E*ven last year- the club received 861 entries, against 654 for the same races this year.

In our last notes it was hinted that some of the Auckland jockeys would find themselves wituo-ut licenses, as the result of the Rotorua enquiry. Considering life nature of the evidence and the admissions of those accused, tlxe sentences administered cannot be described as harsh. Some were prepared to have the chief offenders disqualified lor a very long time.

Most of tlioisc spectators who witnessed the Great Northern Hurdles consider that Mister Gamp had the race won, just prior to falling at the penultimate jump, hut this view is not held by the rider, A. McDonald, who consid'er his mount was well beaten when lie fell. Had McDonald not been so anxious to head off Beau Cavalier, but waited till the last furlong, then Mister Gamp may have beaten his northern rival. As we are not; strong in hurdlers just now, Mister Gamp is worth remembering lor races to come.

Owner-Trainer J. M. Cameron intends taking The Hawk and Goshawk to Australia for spring racing. While it is generally recognised that The Hawk is a wonderful gelding for his

years, he would want some “placing” to win in Australia, for the reason that he is nob now up to weight-for-age standard, and in handicaps be will be called on to carry such big weights that uo event would be good ior him from a bettor's point of view. ♦ >. - * *

As a hurdler Dubious hardly reached expectations, but bis effort as a steeplechaser at the recent meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club was such that those who saw him there anticipate hi,developing into a first-class steeplechaser. The Trentham trainer, H. Telford, recently shifted his team to Wanganui, it being recognised that the Trentham tracks are .not suitable during the winter months for getting young horses ready for early spring rawing. Some two or three seasons ago some of the Trentham trainers went to Wanganui for the same reason, hut the joke lies in the fact that Trainer Sid Reid, who was satisfied to remain at Trenthtam, did best of all with his team in the spring. *—' * «

H was reported prior to the recent Auckland meeting that Rtoyal Form and Zircon were well; and expected to race prominently at the meeting, but neither started. They both claim engagements at the coming meeting of the Te'Kuiti Racing Oub, but as they lack raping it may be the Wellington or Canterbury meetings before their best is shown.

Last August Royal Lineage gave evidence at Ricearton that he was a galloper likely to develop into a very useful stake earner. He wa.s taken to Sydney for the early spring meetings, but for' some reason ■ was raced only once. He is engaged at Napier Park to-dav. and his running there should be noted in view of future meetings;
