IMPORTED CHERRIES.
FRUITGROWERS WANT DUTY IMPOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 14. A pretest against the glutting of tlie New Zealand market with Australian cherries was made at the annual conference of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation. Mr. W. A. Tate (Wairarapa) moved that a duty of fourpence be placed on imported cherries. Mr. F. Sisson (Canterbury) said it had been almost impossible to sell cherries in Canterbury this season, on account of the large importations from Australia. He advocated sending a deputation to the Government. It was finally decided to approach the Government and ask it to impose a duty of fourpence on imported cherries.
