MAORI CHARGED WITH THEFT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 13. A fountain pen dropped on the kitchen floor .fid to the arrest of a, Maori motor mechanic named Charles Mii<r..ay, aged 20, on a charge of breaking and entering the house of Mr J. S. Nightingale and stealing jewellery and other articles t,c the total value of £ls Is -Gd. Entry was effected in tihe afternoon. through the fanlight over the kitchen window, while Mrs Nightingale was out. Tbfc accused pleaded guilty and Was committed' for -sentence to the Supreme - Court. ASSAULT AT A DANCE HALL. WELLINGTON, June 13. Norman Allan Millar, aged 18, and Joseph Mallia, aged 19, were charged with assaulting a man, name unknown, and with resisting the police. They were at a dance, and when the police arrived had the man on the floor punching him. They also resisted the constables. Tiie police stated that the youths had caused trouble at the dance hall on previous occasions. Millar was described as a hoodlum and the leader of a. gang of larrikins. He did very little work. The magistrate (Mr. Page) said that he was. half inclined to send ,the accused to gaol, hut as they were young he would inflict fines. Millar was fined £7 and Mallia £3, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
