JUGO-SLAV G OVERNMENT

EXPRESSES REGRET TO ITALY

BELGRADE, June 2

As a sequel to the rioting 40 university students have been sentenced to 15 days’ imprisonment and 25 are awaiting sentence. A later message says that the reply of the Jugo-Slav Government to Italy’s note expresses sincere regret at the deplorable incidents at Sebenico and Spalato. The Government has taken measures to prevent their recurrence there and elsewhere by reinforcing the police. The events would not have happened if the local authorities had been able to foresee the grave turn the demonstration was going to take. The outbreaks happened suddenly owing to false or exaggerated reports. Concerning the demonstrations at Zara, the Government has also ordeied nn inquiry to determine the responsibility of the officials with a view to punishment. The Government has also ordered estimates to be made of damage done, with a view to compensation, and all guilty persons will be punished. The reply concludes with the expression of the hope that the friendly relations between the two countries will not be disturbed.
