INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS.
AN APPALLING TOTAL. INTERNATIONAL LABOUR CONFERENCE!. ,UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION- Bt Kt.K< 1 !(•• TELEGRAPH—CUP V RIO 11 I (AUSTRALIAN PRESS ASSOCIATION ) GENEVA, June 1. Sir Granville Ryrie, Australian representative, made liis debut at the Internatioftal Labour Conference at Geneva. In a speech on industrial accidents he referred to the British war wounded, of whom there were 1,700,000, while in the first five years’ period after the war industrial casualties numbered 2,400,000. This appalling toll was only remediable by scientific prevention. Probably much was due to -the failure of the human element, because nowadays almost ns much was spent on machine guards as on perfecting the machine itself. The conference began a discussion on a world-wide “safety first” campaign with co-operation between the employers and the employees.
