STOLEN CARS.

DETECTION SCHEME. A proposal has Iveeq placed before the Chief Secretary (Mr. Bruntnell) which is claimed to he one of the most efficient methods to indicate to the traffic police when a motor-car lias been stolen, says the “Sydney Morning Herald.” The idea is a locked number plate, which would remain in a perpendicular fashion when the car is not in use. Should the car be stolen, it is claimed, it would be impossible for the thieves to alter the position of the plate without the key in the possession of the owner. Recently Mr. Bruntnell toured the city in a car with a number plate in a perpendicular position. The Chief Secretary subsequently stated that he was much impressed witli the idea of a locked .number plate, also by the keenness of the traffic police. A total of 18 police officers were passed, and of these 17 either stopped the Ministerial car or drew attention to the number plate. The only constable who allowed the car to pass was busy sorting out a tangle of traffic. '
