FILLING A TANK.
NOT A SIMPLE MATTER Filling a fuel tank with petrol is not altogether the simple matter that the average new motorist imagines. The tank is a potential bomb, and as such at all times should be treated with due respect. In filling the fuel tank always carefully strain the petrol through a chamois skin or fine metal screen to remove water or other foreign matter. If this precaution is not taken accumulations in the fuel tank of foreign matter are certain to result; carburettor or vacuum tank failure will inevitably occur. When using a chamois leather to strain the fuel, particularly in cold weather, bo careful, that the funnel is held in thorough contact with the fuel tank. Under certain conditions the flow of the fuel through the chamois skin generates •static electricity, and were the funnel not in thorough contact with the metal of the tank a spark might result that would set the fuel on fire. There have been many instances of such occurrences, and all caution should therefore, at all times, be observed.
