The first round resulted as follows: 10 STONE CLASS. Arawhata No/ 1 defeated Arawhata No*. 2. A good pull. AVon by one and a half inches. , ' ‘ Awatuna defeated AVaiteka Road. The honours were well divided, the winners holding an advantage for the latter half of the pull, winning by 2| inches. 13 STONE CLASS. Arawhata defeated Eltliam after a two-minute continuance advantage which see-sawed from one to three inches, eventually winning by two inches. For the first minute Eltliam held with an inch to the good. Awatuna .secured and held a four-* inch lead at the first pull, gradually increasing their supremacy from the first minute until ‘at call of time’ they had just on a six-inch advantage of Qpunake. The tournament will be continued tonight and the two following nights. IV is probable that additional entries will be received. Tlie FederaL Band will play a programme ot selections and will be present at each session of tli© tourney.

CONTEST AT MANAT A. A tug-o’-war is to- bo held at- the Manaia Town Hall on Tuesday, June 12; and Wednesday, June .13, when over £3O will bo o fie re cl in prize Tnonev. The Jirst prize lor the tug-o’-war will be £2O and the second £7 10s, while £2 2s will be offered for an open weight lazy-stick pull and £1 Is for under 11 stone. The nomination for the tug-o’-war is 12s 6d. a team of five men (average weight, 13 stone) and entries close on June 7. Post entries will he accepted for the lazystick competition. The electric lighting system as used at Eltham will be in operation and will be of added interest to spectators enabling them to distinguish the strength of the pulls in the tug-o - war. . , ~ Mr J. J. O’Dea timekeeper, and Messrs F. Mourie and J. Christie lock stewards. It is anticipated that the contest will draw a hig crowd of spectators fvom all parts of the district. The proceeds are to he devoted to the Manaia Band’s new instrument fund.
