Mr E. Dixon, of Hawera, left on a visit to Wellington to-day. - At the meeting of the Stratford County Council on Saturday, Cr T. B. Anderson was elected delegate to the annual meeting of the Local Bodies’ Association, to be held on May 30. Dr. J. Cairney, medical superintendent of the Hawera Public Hospital, left by the south express this morning en route for Dunedin, where he is to conduct medical examinations at the Otago University.

Official advice has been received by the Mayor, Mr E. A, Pacey, that their Excellencies the Governor General Sir Charles and Lady Fergusson propose to visit Hawera on Friday, June 15. Mr T. A. Bridge, of Mnnaia, was a passenger by the south express this morning. He is proceeding on a visit to Wellington. Mr Lowrie, American Consul-General for New Zealand, leaves for Washington on June 5 and returns in October. During his absence Mr B. Gotlieb will take charge. He has been in the consular service at Singapore. Mr J. C. Hudson, American vice-consul at Wellington, will go to Singapore.—Press Association.

A Press Association massage from Hamilton reports the death of the Rev. Dr. Thaddens 'O’Callaghan. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, who is to open the new infant school to-morrow, has advised the Mayor that he will arrive in Hawera about lunch time. He intends to stay here to-morrow night and the evening will be spent in dealing with public matters which the council or other local bodies wish to bring before him. A London cable message states that Commander Nelson lias been appointed to command tlie Philomel and to be naval officer commanding at Auckland. He recently returned from China, and sails by the Rotorua on June 8.

The death is reported of Mere Raiha Pereniki at Ptira, Thames, once ohieftainness of the Ngatimani tribe. She was greatly respected by Maori and Pakeha alike. She was an authority on tribal lore and natvie women’s customs. She was a prominent figure in the days of the mining boom and wielded great influence in favour of the diggers overcoming the natives’ objections to prospectors traversing Maori lands. She leaves a son, Hare Perenike, a. prominent rangitira, and a daughter, Haora Tarangangui. The deceased’s approximate age was 72 years.
