NOTES AND NEWS

(By “Limited.”)

With the Wanganui meeting in progress, maters have been practically’ at a stand still on the local tracks this week. The next meeting to engage local trainers’ attention will be the Otaki fixture on June 2nd and 4th, for which the following Hawera horses have been nominated: Whysogne, Glengariff, Royal Lover, Eka, Paitonu, Bisox, Kawliakina, Green Acre, Gasnapper, Argus, Kaha and Tane. Royal Mint returned from Wanganui after having competed in the Connelly Handicap on the first day. It is unlikely that his Auckland engagements will be continued. It Brough has had a rising two-year-old sent to him from Auckland—the youngster being by the imported Peach Brandy, out of Cool Lass, therefore a half sister to the promising Coal Mint in the same stable. Urcades and Airtight are to spelled for the winter months. Polyphemus is to he given a trial over the Ellerslie country at the Auckland June meeting. M. Conway, who was successful on San Fera at Hawera, has had an attack of rheumatism and was unable to take the mount on his old favourite on the second day of at Wanganui. With about two months of the present racing season to run J. Fryer tops the list of winning Taranaki trainers, his record to date being 18 wins; E. George and O. Cox following with 14 and 13 wins respectively. Barryanda has been returned to her owner at Waverley, and the Martian mare will probably be relegated to the stud. Captain Gazely was given a couple of runs- at Hawer a and is having a race at Wanganui to-day. The Captain ts a noted mud lark and the tracks will scon be to his advantage. C. Jackson has promised Benzora a spell after the Wanganui meeting, go the Bisogne gelding will have a welldeserved let up for a month or two. Royal Acre is another that is to be given a let up after Wanganui. The coming two-year-old fillv, in O. Cox’s stables, by Chief Ruler-valaria, is developing nicely and if present promises are fulfilled, should be something out of the ordinary. This filly has had the name Valpre bestowed on her. In the Wanganui Steeplechase, on Thursday, Comical, that great disappointment over big country, was ridden by an amateur, Mr. R Russel of Hawke’s Bay, and for the first time during his steeplechase career, completed the course without mishap. Mr. Russel’s effort on Comical was a j)articular fine one and evoked rounds of applause when he returned to the bird cage. Comical finished well and is such a grand type of a horse that one may et have hopes of him making good..
