NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Maecenas.) Avro was very slow 'to find his legs at Wanganui on Thursday, but he finished really well, and will iso bp amongst tlie istake-earners -again. **■ * * *

Lady's Boy .showed all his brilliancy last Thursday, and with .a little help from his rider must certainly' have won. * * * * *

Callanmore was unlucky at Wanganui last Thursday,, but ran well enough to .suggest his being hard to beat in the immediate future. * * * * *

San Fera gave a very poor display last Thursday, and does not appear to be the success: #

The Stratford-trained Radiate (Polvdamcn —Bleriot), who is well enough bred to win good handicaps, gave a line display in the Hack Steeplechase at Wanganui last- Thursday. He was unluckv to fall at the last fence. *****

Royal Damon received a splendid run next 'to the rails last Thursday, hut the last furlong helped to bring about his defeat. „ * * *****

Blimp was one of those that had a rrood run at Wanganui on Thursday, but his rider lost certain victory through not going after Horomea toilJ the last furlong. * * * *

Trainer R. Johnston deisprves a word of praise for t-lio coiTcLitiioii in wiucih. ne produced Horomea, who , registered a oood performance in leading from ena to end at Wanganui last Thursday.

Silvermine. show;d much brilliancy to win on (Thursday. He is only .a, little fellow and this is against him under the winter (scale of weights. f. * * *

Benzora was very unlucky ait Wanganmi. He missed the ‘'jump out and was giving the (’leaders a big .start ovei the early stages-. Even at the straigh entrance he was many lengths away, but finishing with a great run, was a o-oo d third at the post. * * * *

Fee Simple ran well on tho first day of the Wanganui meeting, and but for covering some extra ground, must have been closer to the winner of the Rurua Hack. » * * * *

Raaecourse punters are sheep-like in their “follow-the-leader” attitude. At Fgmont Desert Lad was hacked down to heavy “odds on,” but was narrowly defeated. At Wanganui last Thursday lie was neglected by backers when he won. „ , * * * * *

Pouri looked well when sent out to contest the May Hurd’es last Thursday. He ran fourth in the event, and, more vigorously ridden, must have finished even closer to the winner. - * * * *

Troll us was a “good thing” beaten at Wano-anui. His rider rushed him to the front, hut had to open up a big lead. Troilus was literally ridden into the grounds

Although the weather wad spring-like for the opening dav of the AVanganu 1 Jockey Olnb’s winter meeting, the totalisator receipts showed a. decline, but as the attendance was well up to the average a.nd the stake money was fimaiM. the club should show a muenneeded credit balance. * * * *

The r>reposed alteration of 'thenracing dates was freely discussed by members of the AVanganm Jockey Club at their meeting last Thursday, but few subscribed to the view that the alteration would benefit the club. Most of the members agreed that a one-day spring, meeting would be a mistake. 1 * f» *

Glen mss ran a. fine, race in the Connolly Handicap on Thursday. As lie carries welter weights well and handles soft going better than most race homes, he can he kept in view for ra.ces to be run during the next few weeks *****

Vesper us was backed as if the Connolly Handicap was at his mixrcy. He received a very bad run, and this helped to keep him out of the prize money. With a good run Vesperus may have won. , * ******

That many horses, do their schoolin"” in public was demonstrated at Wanganui on Thursday last, when Shining Armour gave a very poor exhibition "of jumping in the Ivaitoke Hurdles.' He jumped the first fence reasonably well, but. thereafter his efforts were .shockingly bad, and incidentally he spoilt the chances of most of the runners, and caused the favourite (Mister Gamp) to fall. Shining Armour certainly wants nione tuition. * * * * *

In the past several professional’, jockeys have ridden Comical in his efforts at steepleehasing, hut in every instance the great hurdler failed to get. over the big fences. Evidently such failure was not due to Comical’s inability to jump big fences, but more to want of help from his riders. This opinion is formed after seeing the excellent display Comical gave at Wanganui on Thursday, when ridden by an amateur (Mr Russell) whose horsemanship should put many professional jockeys to shame. When one considers that BrigadCliff H was making his second attempt at steeple chasing, his was a remarkably good performance in the Wanganui Steeplechase. . He was pulling so hard after going half the distance that Alan McDonald decided to. take Brigadier Bill to the front. There; is jwst a chance that this gelding may he bothered by the extra distance of the Great Northern Steeplechase, but as he will strip very fit he will be one of the hardest to beat.
