AEROPLANE CLUB PROPOSED.

PRELIMINARY MEETING HELD. HAWERA AS AN AIRPORT. A preliminary meeting was held iast evening, which was attended mostly by old war pilots and others interested, to discuss the formation of a light aeroplane dub in Hawera. It was considered that the question of the finance necessary to- run a club was not unsurmountable. The chief difficulty at this stage appears to be the provision of a ground satisfactory for use as a landing ground for training purposes, and to serve as an air-port for heavier machines. The area required is approximately 600 x 600 yards. The gound required must be level, and it is essential that to- establish Hawera as an important half-way stopping place between Auckland and Wellington, the property acquired should he as close to town as possible. It was stated the project is more to educate the people of Hawera. with “air sense” as in the very neaT future aeroplanes will play a tremendous part in the daily commercial life of tlie Dominion and overseas. Those interested in the scheme have been prospecting for a suitable site, but so far no place meeting with the necessary requirements has been .located. Owners of property sufficiently close to town, considered suitable Tor the purpose of equipping an aerodrome are requested to submit- particulars which will be passed on to the -right quarter for investigation.
