DAWSON FALLS NOTES.

(By “Snowline.”) Winter has not yet come to the mountain, but a heavier frosting of snow on the peak, the yellowed leaf of the konini whirling in drifts before the wind, and a hippy feel to the early morning air are evidences that at any moment now he may be upon us with snow-shod feet. Furious northerly winds raged over the slopes for days last week, battering the crest and the buildings in a vain attempt to do serious damage, Sunday must- have been a disappointment to those —quite a large number—who elected to spend their day' on the mountain. Leaving home in bright weather, they ran into thick wreaths of cloud which, driven by a 1 northerly wind, rolled over Egmont all day. Visibility was restricted, to a few yards, and although the rain held off everything was “demmed damp, moist, and unpleasant.” It’s a. pity the weather has such a habit of interfering with our pleasures. On. Sunday night torrential rain fell, which continued with unabated' vigour all Alonday. Tlie chief damage was the rutting of the road caused by the overflow. PERSONAL. Quite a large party were assembled at tlie hostel this week-end, and a party of teachers from the Diocesan School, Auckland, occupy the upper cottage. Air. and Mrs. of Auckland, attempted the ascent on AVednesday, but owing to a late; start did not get beyond Eahtham’s Peak. Air. and Airs. Alills, London, who have been staying here for tlie past week, visited Stratford House on Sunday, and owing to a misdirection from a passing tramper took the wrong track and lost themselves for some hours on the ridges in the fog, reaching home some time in the late afternoon. In this they were more fortunate than another party of 13, which had the unenviable experience of wandering for bom’s in the pitchy darkness of a wet night over the roughest ridges before they eventually found their way down. Visitors for the past week include: Dr. and Airs. Hardwick-Smith, Mr. John Hardwick-Smith, Air. R. Triggs, AVellington; Air. an-d Airs.
