A Wellington message states that Miss Grace Brownlie, a sister of Messrs Cyril and Maurice Brownlie, died at Napier on May 11. The New Zealand Rugby Union management committee on Wednesday night passed a vote of condolence with the family, the resolution to be forwarded to Mr. Maurice Brownlie, captain of the All Black team now on its way to South Africa. A well deserved tribute was paid last night by Mr F. W. Horner to Mr J. W. Velvin, who for several years has been a most efficient lion, secretary of the Male Choir! Mr Horner praised his thoroughness, his tact and -his remarkable good service to the choir. In acknowledging the compliment, Mr Velvin said he had found when he first arrived in Hawera the choir needed a secretary, and he had taken up the work at once and was still keen on the job and anxious to push forward the interests of the choir. The complL ments paid Mr Velvin were cordially endorsed by every member of the choir. At "Wednesday’s meeting of the Taranaki Education Board, an emphatic protest concerning the remarks bn the operation of daylight saving in the country schools made by the medical officer of health at the last meeting of the board was received from the. Farmers’ Union. The committees in most cases did not alter the time until it was found; absolutely necessary to enable the children to attend punctually. Who should; knowlocal conditions better than the committees? it was" asked. The letter was received, the opinion being expressed that the protest did l not- concern the board, but the medical officer who made the remarks.
